Are My Info Product Days Numbered?

Come on.

Seriously?

When have info products never been viable?

You can build a membership site, create thousands of pages of content to fuel an AdSense campaign, be a mentor to others in your niche, act as a service provider who tackles tasks others would rather pay to have done – or develop your own info products that provide you with a residual income for many years.

Info product development means different things to different people. An info product is a product that shares information with others – but the format in which it teaches can vary. Some use an eBook, while others prefer making people pay for audio and video productions in various forms.

Any or all of the methods can help you generate an income online, if the info product is created and marketed in a way that makes consumers rave about your abilities as a teacher.

Info product development will still be very viable for the rest of 2010. If you’re just getting started, don’t mistakenly believe that because there are so many free blogs, websites and article directories chock full of information, there’s no way consumers will pay to gain information shared in a digital download.

You might even find that a healthy combination of audio, video and written text is what makes your hungry audience crave your info products.

Is the Internet Marketing Pie Still Big Enough?

There’s a saying that you should adopt when you decide whether or not to get into a niche – “Everything that can be done has been done before.”

Business = Reinvention.

It’s about putting your own stamp on a product or topic and making people understand that yours is better than the rest.

If it didn’t work this way, then we’d all be resigned to accepting only one hamburger brand, one brand of jeans, one movie with the same theme.

Think of how many e-Books, special reports and white papers you’ve read to date. There are a wide variety of styles in teaching this business. Some will give a methodical, step-by-step technical accounting of AdWords, while others will deliver a more theory-based approach based on gut instinct and trend forecasting.

There will be plenty of room for you as an Internet Marketer in 2010. It doesn’t matter what niche you want to enter.

There’s a spot with your name reserved on it…

If you want to succeed, then you should be going into this business truly believing that you can do it better things than any of your competitors. That you can provide something no one else can – whether it’s secret knowledge of a trick used to make more money or it’s in the way you teach – that helps people learn better from you than others.

Don’t go into Internet Marketing with a mindset that you’ll throw darts against the wall and hope something sticks.

There’s room for you in this industry – but only if you’re willing to do the research and map out a plan of attack before you haphazardly jump in and waste time, money and patience on something you don’t really grasp.

There may not be an Internet Marketing degree you can earn at a college near you, but there is a wealth of information that can prepare you to succeed as an online marketer in any niche market you want to tap.

All you have to do is generate enough interest, determination and motivation to get you from point A to point Z and always pay attention to the W-O-R-K word.

I’ll Get Totally Focused… In a Minute!

One big problem I see from the folks who come to me for Internet Marketing advice is they just can’t seem to figure out what to do next.

Not only that, but their path(s) meander all over the place – from learning the latest PPC non-slapping techniques to how to launch new poducts and even working on an info product they can call their very own. Maybe an e-Book or something more ambitious?

Information overload is smacking us right between the eyes.

There are greener pastures though where overload stops if you’re willing to look at the rest of 2010 and make a FOCUSED plan now instead of jumping all over the place as you go along.

Part of that “One big problem” we talked about earlier is that we’re all kind of like kids in a candy store.

We’re looking at one bright shiny new object after another and aren’t really sure what they do anyway OR we already own more IM bright shiny objects than we can count.

How about we start right here and right now?

For the rest of 2010, let’s do better things!

Sit down and map out your plan month by month. Afterall, you only have 7 months to plan out instead of 12. How about we just get started on the rest of this month and next month? Imagine the possibilities.

More: How’s Your Social Marketing Thingy Working Out?

It probably would have been a lot smoother if everyone (including me) had done his or her part to publish solid content and keep topics relevant with honesty .

One might think that it’s inevitable when a good thing surfaces (like Social Marketing) the spammers, spoogers and shady characters will suck it dry of any opportunity it possesses.

In this writers opinion nothing could be further from the truth.

What if instead better equipped Social venues emerged on the pay-to-play or don’t play at all front?

Social sites like Squidoo, e-Zine Articles, Google Knol and Hub Pages and others have already learned their lesson when it comes to cracking down on spammers, spoogers and some good old-fashioned pond scum marketers.

This year more now than ever promises the evolution of deep niche-specific social networks for people – along with other broad web properties to cater to even more niche specific groups.

It will be your job to infiltrate these member/user areas in a way that helps the community with true value so that your relationships are branded as trusting and honest and not as a blood-sucking leech in their online society.

Social networking will also play an important role in on-the-go advertising. Mobile has already evolved into a new sort of social marketing.

Adults and kids social network from their mobile devices – logging into Facebook, Tweeting about everyday actions they’re engaged in.

You’ll become part of the common mass marketing strategy already being tested in many markets today.

I’m curious what the next 7 months of 2010 might bring. More of what it already has? We’ll see.

How’s Your Social Marketing Thingy Working Out?

Our 2009 online business year was the year of kicks, slaps, ,bites, scratches, smacks and heavy rule changes in regards to enforcement in the web 2.0 Social Marketing world.

Social Marketing real estate saw a garguangatuan rise in user/members by the marketer folks, followed quickly by an equally large surge of spammers and spoogers. One might wonder if they’re the same folks?

Early on though we saw  more than one of the Social Marketing biggies get punished by Google for their lack of properly dotting ‘i’s and crossing ‘t’s.

Now those series of slaps and gouges by the search engines is being passed down to you and me.

Almost everyone I know in the Internet Marketing community has clinched their marketing belts, set-up restricted access to content, slowed down on  links they’re using and implemented (overnight) lots of other rules to attempt to keep Google from laying waste to their future earnings. Good luck with that one.

Social networking was once a way for us to share information and opinions with co-workers, friends and family – it’s so very much more than that now.

Social will continue to pave the way for marketers to immerse themselves in communities where targeted consumers hang around, where they can convert peer traffic into clicks and rack up more and more sales.

Time Management & Tomatoes

Questions usually show up around business conversion sooner or later. One of the big ones asked and overheard on a regular basis is about what are good time management systems, tools etc.

For several years now I’ve run across a common thread in the time management tapestry. That common thread wraps around the core concept of timing tasks using some kind of count down mechanism telling you a certain amount of time has passed. Like an oven timer.

Until recently the name was a mystery to me.

Enter the Pomodoro Technique and common sense instructions on how to use the technique.

What I like is there’s finally a name for the set of tools surrounding what had only been a vague reference. That this set of free tools has been hanging around since 1993 or so also prompts a big thumbs up.

My own experience with Pomodoro is still a work in progress. While I enjoy the timed value for doing mundane tasks and assignments, I have difficulty stopping work on something I enjoy doing.

For another (more in depth) look give this blog post by Alyssa Gregory a read through. Good stuff.

Francisco Cirillo (the Pomodoro creator) has further insights on the current happenings around the technique on his blog.

Newbie, Newbie, Neeeeeeeewbie!

“When you label me, you negate me.” ~ Soren Kierkegaard

For the full effect here replace the taunting words “Nah, Nah, Naaah, Nah, Naaaaaah” with the word “Newbie” and say (or sing) them out loud.

Go ahead. No one is listening and even if they are, think of the conversation you’ll have after.

When you insert the word “Newbie”, the taunt should sound a little something like this…

“Newbie, Newbie, Neeeeeeeewbie”

Maybe you recall hearing those words ring in your ears and knowing someone was being teased, taunted or “put in their place”.

Possibly that “someone” was you.

And if it was you, likely there was a little sting inside because you were being singled out for something that may turn out to be a simple opinion belonging to someone else or even an out and out lie.

When I hear any Internet Marketer casually drop the label “Newbie” on an unsuspecting person who just happens to be new to Internet Marketing, the sound makes me cringe.

Even more painful is hearing someone who’s new to the landscape use the word to describe themselves. Sadly one does not have to listen long to hear the word uttered.

Okay. It’s break time. As in give yourself a break.

Take in a deep breath and try this on…

Everyone of us from the newest and least experienced to the veterans in our midst face things each day in business that we don’t have a clue how to handle. Doesn’t matter who we are or what we bring to the marketing table.

There’s always something we don’t even know that we don’t know yet.

And if there’s not, then we may want to take a long look at the activities we’re involved in when we work on our businesses.

If you’re not consistently uncomfortable you are likely not growing your business (there’s a beautiful paradox in there somewhere).

For certain you’re not giving yourself credit for the talent, skills and unique attributes you already possess.

Hey. All the things you need to know, be and do are out there ready to be learned, applied and acted upon.

Does it make sense if the word “Newbie” is the label you give yourself or someone gives you (and you accept) that you’re going to think, be and do a ”Newbie”?

Of course it does. Or you would not have read his far.

Next time you hear “Newbie” or even read the word in an e-mail, article or blog, let it go. Make up your mind that you’re not going to wrap yourself up in a silly label someone you may love, respect or admire puts on you.

Now comes the hard part… turn away from the so called expert and seek good advice elsewhere. If  that expert is willing to publicly put a label on folks, you really don’t want to hear what’s being said about you in private.

And when you catch yourself calling the Internet Marketer inside of you a ”Newbie”, take a mental step back and realize what you hear may be only an opinion. Then pat yourself on the back and remember all the wondrous attributes that brought you here in the first place.

As far as skills go (lack of experience usually accounts for the discomfort in the skill department) figure out one thing you want to learn right now – and go learn, apply and act on it. Only one thing. Not twenty. Okay?

Perhaps the Kierkegaard quote at the start of this post should have read; “When I label me, I negate me”.

Let me know in the comments what your thoughts and ideas are. Always appreciated.
